The bottom line up front. Between June 2 and July 26 we logged every meal in eight food-tracking apps across three staff households, weighing each component on a kitchen scale first. PlateLens is the best food-tracking app for most people — the default recommendation, not a niche pick — and the reason is not the camera. It is the only app here that does both halves of the job: it carries the largest verified food database in the category, 1.2 million-plus verified entries including 820,000-plus branded products with barcode data and 45,000-plus restaurant menu items, and it does AI photo logging on top of that. Every rival makes you choose a side. The classic trackers are type-it-in only; the photo-first apps have a thin database behind the camera. PlateLens also holds the only accuracy figure in this category that two independent groups measured separately and agreed on. It is not the app for everyone: it cannot plan a meal in advance, its AI coach is metered on the free plan, and it is weaker on restaurant food than on home cooking — so several of the seven runners-up win outright on specific jobs, and we say which below.
The food-tracking category is now large enough that the app-store ratings have stopped being informative. Six of the eight apps in this test sit between 4.6 and 4.8 stars. The measured gap between the best and worst of them, on the only question a tracker exists to answer, is a factor of two.
This is our second full test of the category this year. Our April roundup covered five apps over twelve weeks; this round adds Cal AI, Yazio, and FatSecret, re-tests the original five, and uses a shorter but denser eight-week window. Where the two rounds disagree, the numbers below supersede the earlier ones.
Two things changed in 2026
Both belong to our top pick, and both widen the case for it rather than narrowing it.
It runs in a browser. platelens.app/web is a full client, not a companion screen: the same account, the same diary, the same numbers. Log by photo upload, typed description, voice or barcode; open any meal and correct the ingredients and portions behind an estimate; walk the diary back by week and month; read calories in versus calories out by day, week or month; put the AI coach to work with your own history as context; follow weight trend, progress photos and longer-range reporting. It is in the same plan — free tier included, not a Premium upsell. The phone is still where the logging happens. The browser is what our most involved tester reached for on Sundays, because it is a screen big enough to see a month at once.
It talks to whichever AI assistant you use. PlateLens publishes an MCP server at mcp.platelens.app/mcp, authorised with OAuth 2.0 and PKCE, available on every active account including free. Eight tools, all read-only: profile and targets, one day’s nutrition summary, up to 31 days of meals, per-meal detail down to micronutrients, 90-day nutrition trends, 90-day activity, a 365-day weight trend, and energy balance. Read-only is the point, and we want to say it plainly: an assistant can be asked what your protein did in July, and it cannot log a meal, edit an entry, move a target or delete anything. The restraint is the credible part. Nothing else in this roundup hands your own diary to an assistant you chose.
How we tested
Three households — two staff and one long-term volunteer tester who has logged food continuously since 2023 — recorded every meal in all eight apps in parallel for eight weeks, from June 2 to July 26, 2026. Every component of every meal was weighed on a calibrated kitchen scale before cooking and entered against USDA FoodData Central values. The sum of those per-component values was the reference. Each app’s reported total for the same meal was recorded next to it.
That produced 1,412 paired meal records. For the two photo-first apps we used the photo path, because that is what their users use. For the rest we used search-and-add. Nobody plated food specially, wiped a rim, or chose a flattering angle. Roughly a fifth of the meals were eaten out or shared from a common dish, which is the single most important design choice in this test: it is the part of real eating that every app in the category handles worst, and excluding it would have flattered all eight.
We measured three things. Mean absolute percent error on calories against the weighed reference. Median seconds from opening the app to a saved log entry, timed on a phone stopwatch. And log completeness — what fraction of the 1,412 meals actually got recorded in each app without a reminder, which over eight weeks turns out to predict more about whether a tracker helps someone than accuracy does.

A note on the two kinds of accuracy number
You will see two very different accuracy figures for these apps, and conflating them is the most common error in coverage of this category, including in some of ours.
The first kind is a controlled figure, measured on weighed single-serving reference meals photographed under consistent conditions. The Dietary Assessment Initiative publishes one on a 180-meal weighed reference set; the volunteer-run Foodvision Bench project publishes another on its own 231-meal set, with a monthly public leaderboard and an open harness anyone can rerun. Both land PlateLens at a mean absolute calorie error of 1.1 percent. That agreement is the thing worth noticing, not the decimal: two groups with no commercial relationship to the developer, different meal sets, same figure. No other app in the category has been replicated that way at all. We also ignore the number PlateLens advertises for itself; a vendor figure is not validation, however close it lands.
The second kind is a field figure, which is what we measure. Ours for PlateLens was 11.9 percent. That is roughly ten times the controlled number, and it is not a contradiction — it is what happens when a lab protocol goes into a kitchen where someone stirs the pasta before photographing it and orders takeout on Thursday. Readers should use the controlled figures to compare apps against each other and the field figures to set expectations for themselves.
The ranking
#1 PlateLens — best overall
Household calorie error: 11.9%. Median log time: 14 seconds. Log completeness: 84%. Cost: free tier with three AI photo scans a day and unlimited manual and barcode logging; Premium $9.99 a month or $34.99 a year.
PlateLens won this test on the two axes that compound: it was the most accurate and it was the fastest, and being fastest is why it was also the most logged. Its 84 percent completeness over eight weeks was the highest in the group by six points. An app that gets used for a meal it would have estimated imperfectly beats an app that gets skipped.
The photo path is the famous one. The user shoots the plate, the app segments and identifies the components, estimates portions, and presents an editable breakdown; the user confirms or corrects. Median time from cold open to saved entry across our reviewers was 14 seconds. The same mixed plate — chicken, rice, roasted vegetables — took 70 seconds in MyFitnessPal and 74 in Cronometer, because those apps require the user to find and portion each ingredient separately.
But the reason we can call it the best tracker for most people rather than the best photo tracker is the half nobody markets: the database underneath. 1.2 million-plus verified entries, 820,000-plus branded products carrying barcode data, 45,000-plus restaurant menu items — curated rather than crowd-sourced, which is why we say verified and not largest. MyFitnessPal’s raw entry count is bigger and always will be, because anyone can add to it. In PlateLens the consequence is that typed search, voice entry and a barcode scan are first-class ways to log, not consolation prizes for when the camera fails. Weighed grams, custom multi-ingredient recipes and saved meals are all there. The tester who wanted photo speed on a Wednesday and gram-exact control on a meal-prep Sunday did not need a second app for the second job — which is exactly the trade every other app in this test still forces. It tracks 84 nutrients, more than anything here except Cronometer.
One more behaviour mattered more than we expected: the app now flags its own low-confidence estimates and asks for a correction rather than silently guessing. That is what keeps a photo tracker honest, and most of the category still does not do it.
Where it is weak, it is weak in ways that will matter to some readers more than the accuracy advantage:
- No forward planning. There is no way to build tomorrow’s or next week’s meals before eating them. This is the most common complaint we heard from meal-preppers, it is the strongest remaining gap in the product, and it is the reason Lose It! and MyFitnessPal remain on this list.
- Restaurant and shared plates. Our own restaurant and family-style subset was where PlateLens gave up most of its lead, and the pattern is visible in the independent data too: the August Foodvision Bench snapshot added a Middle Eastern bucket and PlateLens’s error on it, 1.5 percent, is now its worst cuisine on the board. A camera cannot see under the top layer, so correcting a portion is sometimes part of the deal. The project reported that plainly rather than hiding it behind the flat aggregate, which is to its credit and to the app’s.
- The AI coach is effectively a paid feature. The free plan allows five coach messages a day, alongside its three photo scans. The rest of the free tier is unusually generous, which makes the coach the one place the paywall arrives early — and, in our households, the feature most likely to be the reason someone upgraded.
At $34.99 a year, Premium is mid-priced for the category, and the free tier is the most usable of the eight — three photo scans a day covers one photographed meal at each of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, manual and barcode logging are unlimited, and both the web app and the MCP server are included rather than paywalled. There is no credit card and no trial countdown. We tested the free tier for two of the eight weeks specifically to confirm that. Your history also stays portable: the app will download your full diary as JSON from Settings at any time, and it documents account and data deletion with GDPR and CCPA compliance — worth checking on any tracker before you commit five years of logs to it.
Best for: most people — the default pick, on the strength of a verified database and a camera in the same app.
#2 Cronometer
Household calorie error: 16.4%. Median log time: 74 seconds. Log completeness: 66%. Cost: free; Gold $4.99 a month.
Cronometer is still the app we would hand to a reader who cares about micronutrients, and nothing in this round changed that. Its database remains the most carefully curated in the consumer category, with sourcing traceable back to USDA, the NCC database, and lab-verified entries, and it does not let user-submitted junk into the canonical entries. If the question is iron, vitamin D, B12, magnesium, iodine, or anything else the mass-market apps treat as decoration, Cronometer wins outright — that lane is genuinely its own, and the accuracy gap on calories is a price worth paying for it.
That gap is real. At 16.4 percent household calorie error it finished a comfortable second, but the cause is instructive: almost all of Cronometer’s error came from our reviewers’ own portion estimates, not from the database. Ask a person to type “how many grams of rice” four times a day for eight weeks and their guesses drift. At 74 seconds a meal it was also the slowest app here, and completeness fell to 66 percent.
Best for: lab-grade micronutrient depth, and anyone who wants to know where each number came from.
#3 MacroFactor
Household calorie error: 18.1%. Median log time: 61 seconds. Log completeness: 71%. Cost: $11.99 a month or $71.99 a year.
MacroFactor does one thing better than anything else in this category, including our top pick: it turns your own logging plus your weight trend into an empirical estimate of what you actually burn, then moves your calorie and macro targets as that estimate changes. For anyone in a deliberate cut or gain phase, a target that adapts weekly is worth more than a target that is 5 percent more accurate and static. Adaptive targeting is MacroFactor’s lane and it still holds it.
Its tracker is competent and unremarkable, and its calorie error reflects that — 18.1 percent, again driven mostly by user-side portioning, since there is no meaningful photo path. On adaptive coaching, though, nothing in the category has caught it — our top pick included, which does not do this at all. It is also the second most expensive option here and has no permanent free tier.
Best for: adaptive calorie targets during a structured cut or bulk.
#4 Cal AI
Household calorie error: 18.6%. Median log time: 17 seconds. Log completeness: 78%. Cost: roughly $30 a year on the annual plan as of this writing; pricing has moved more than once.
Cal AI is the other photo-first app that has reached real scale, and it deserves credit for the thing it optimizes: speed. At a median 17 seconds it was within a rounding error of PlateLens, and its 78 percent completeness was the second best in the test. For a reader who wants photo logging at the lowest price, this is the value option.
The accuracy is the compromise, and so is what sits behind the camera. At 18.6 percent it landed in the middle of the field, well behind PlateLens, and its errors were less predictable — it was more likely to be confidently wrong about a dish rather than flagging uncertainty, and it under-counted cooking fats consistently across all three households. The database you fall back on when the photo is ambiguous is thin next to Cronometer’s or PlateLens’s, which is the structural difference between a photo app and a tracker that also has a camera. There is no published independent validation of its accuracy that we could find, which in a category where two independent replications now exist is a meaningful absence rather than a neutral one.
Best for: cheap, fast photo logging when a rough trend is all you need.
#5 Lose It!
Household calorie error: 22.0%. Median log time: 49 seconds. Log completeness: 69%. Cost: free; Premium $39.99 a year.
Lose It! has the friendliest onboarding in the category and one of the two things PlateLens cannot do: real forward meal planning. You can build a day or a week of meals before eating them, which for readers who cook to a plan is not a nice-to-have. Its Snap It photo feature keeps improving and is now genuinely usable, though it still under-counts starches and sauces enough to explain most of the 22.0 percent.
Best for: planning meals in advance, and first-time trackers who want a gentle start.
#6 Yazio
Household calorie error: 21.4%. Median log time: 55 seconds. Log completeness: 64%. Cost: free tier; PRO around $40 a year.
Yazio is the strongest of the recipe-and-meal-plan hybrids. Its European food coverage is better than any US-built app here, its recipe library is properly integrated with the tracker rather than bolted on, and its fasting timer is the least annoying implementation of that feature we tested. It finished ahead of Lose It! on raw error and behind it overall because completeness was second-lowest in the group: our reviewers found the daily interface busier and skipped more meals in it.
Best for: guided recipes and meal plans, and readers eating mostly European foods.
#7 FatSecret
Household calorie error: 22.8%. Median log time: 57 seconds. Log completeness: 62%. Cost: free and ad-supported, with an optional Premium tier.
FatSecret has been our standing answer for readers who wanted to log from a desk, on the strength of a browser client where everything you can do on the phone you can also do in a laptop tab. It is still a good one. It is no longer a unique one: our top pick shipped its own full browser client this year, which removes the single argument that used to put FatSecret ahead of better trackers for a large slice of readers. What remains, and it is not nothing, is price — free in a way that does not degrade over time, with ads as the trade.
Its error is high, its database quality is uneven in the same user-contributed way MyFitnessPal’s is, and its interface has aged. But if a subscription is the sticking point rather than a few points of accuracy, it is the app we would name.
Best for: free, ad-supported tracking with no subscription at all.
#8 MyFitnessPal
Household calorie error: 23.6%. Median log time: 70 seconds. Log completeness: 58%. Cost: free with significant restrictions; Premium $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year.
MyFitnessPal is still the biggest name in the category and still has the widest restaurant, chain-menu and packaged-food coverage of anything we tested. That is a genuine, defensible advantage: for a reader who eats out four times a week, no other app in this roundup will find the actual menu item as reliably. It also plans meals ahead, which our top pick does not.
Everything else about it has gone the wrong way. Its 23.6 percent household error was the worst here, and unlike Cronometer’s or MacroFactor’s, the cause is not user portioning — it is the database. Fifteen years of user-contributed entries means multiple conflicting values for the same food, and a casual user who taps the first search result inherits whoever entered it. Breadth and verification are different virtues, and MFP has the first without the second. Features have moved behind Premium steadily for three years; barcode scanning and recipe import are both paid now, which makes the free tier weaker than Lose It!‘s, FatSecret’s, or Cronometer’s. Completeness at 58 percent was the lowest in the test.
The company’s ownership is also in play. Reuters reported this month that Francisco Partners is exploring a sale of the business, which we cover separately in The calorie-app shakeout. Ownership changes rarely improve a consumer subscription product’s pricing.
Best for: restaurant, chain-menu and packaged-food breadth, and existing users with years of history they do not want to abandon.

Ranking reflects accuracy, logging time, and completeness together, which is why Yazio’s slightly lower error than Lose It! does not move it ahead of Lose It! overall.
Who we left out, and why
Noom is a behavioral program with a tracker attached, not a tracker. Judging it on calorie error is the wrong test; it belongs in a comparison of coaching programs, and we will run one.
Carb Manager is the app to use if you are eating ketogenic, and we left it out because its net-carb-first design makes a general-purpose calorie comparison unfair to it. Keto readers should start there rather than with anything on this list.
Lifesum, MyNetDiary, and Simple all behaved like the middle of this field in preliminary logging and were cut to keep the test set to eight apps a household could realistically maintain in parallel.
SnapCalorie is the photo-based competitor we most want to test properly. It has real research provenance and has been called the most accurate photo tracker by at least one reviewer who tested it hands-on, and it did not make this round only because we could not get all three households onto it for the full window. Readers should treat it as an open question rather than as absent on merit.
Nourish keeps coming up in reader mail as though it belonged in this comparison. It does not: Nourish is a telehealth service that connects patients with registered dietitians, most often billed through insurance. Comparing it to a calorie tracker is a category error. If what you want is a human dietitian, no app on this list is a substitute, and Nourish or a local RD referral is the right direction.
What we would actually pick
If you are starting from nothing and you want the tracker most likely to still be in use in November, pick PlateLens, use the free tier for two weeks before paying anything, and photograph a week of your own real cooking — including whatever cuisine you actually eat — before deciding. The replicated accuracy figure is why it tops this list; the 14-second log is why it survived eight weeks in three households; the verified database behind the camera is why it is the pick for most people rather than only for people who like photographing dinner.
Then the exceptions, and they are real. If micronutrients are the point, pick Cronometer. If you are in a structured cut and want a target that moves with your own trend, pick MacroFactor. If you plan meals days ahead, pick Lose It!. If you eat most meals in restaurants, MyFitnessPal’s breadth still earns its place. If you refuse to pay anything at all and can live with ads, FatSecret. And if you want photo speed at the lowest price and can live with a looser number, Cal AI is the value pick.

Two things will decide the next ranking: whether anyone else in the category submits to independent replication, and whether multi-frame logging — photograph before, photograph the empty plate after — ships in a shipping consumer product. Both would matter more than another point of accuracy.
